I am lucky to be a student at Warren Wilson College. And sketching together an art history education where there is only an art history minor I do not usually say this. I have an amazing team of faculty to support me, but I’m sure they also think I’m a bit whiny about not seeing the art I want to be happening on campus
Since the Elizabeth Holden Arts Gallery, WWC’s gallery, has been updated with standard white walls I’ve been a lot happier and done more gasping in awe than complaining (the walls used to be brown carpet, but we took one wall to the standardized white when video artist Jefferson Pinder shared his work with WWC), but I’ve felt even luckier that my art history professor has, for the last few years, been co-curating an exhibit on the Quilts of Gee’s Bend and their translation into prints.
Now it is what is on the white walls that is taking my breath away.
These Quilts are a big deal to say the least, and I will say very little here because I am already writing so many papers on them for classes that I am ready to let the work speak for itself.
The exhibit of Gee’s Bend: From Quilts to Prints is now open and the reception last night at the Center for Craft, Creativity, and design was phenomenal (I know so because, as a volunteer, I got to count people coming in and in the first hour there were almost 200 bodies in the building). I am looking forward to seeing how the rest of the work is received at WWC. The reception for the Elizabeth Holden Arts Gallery is September 19th, but I was in there this afternoon and there were already students milling about.
Last night was Asheville’s First Friday for the arts, which means artsy events were happening all over downtown. Galleries and museums were open late and wine and snacks were a plenty. I’ve got an interview with the owner of Satellite Gallery in the near future and had a great time with the faculty of WWC that attended and some other WWC students I am mentoring. We all gathered at the CCCD to see the quilts and prints, stopped over to the Black Mountain College Museum for a crowded talk, and then stopped over to Blue Spiral Gallery and the Asheville Art Museum so I could show them Community. Even though I am gearing up to head to New York City this spring I am proud to see the arts community in Asheville getting up to speed with innovative works and presenting shows that lend to interesting discourse. Getting some white walls up is always a great start!
